If you're wondering how you'll find the Rorasuketo table at Mitten Kittens in Lansing this October, keep your eyes out for the weirdos wearing purple Lala t-shirts. So far, we're only planning on distributing shirts to the immediate creative team and booth babes (well, the booth hunk, anyway), but I might toss a few fun ones in the order just in case a billionaire skydives into the immediate vicinity and says, "You're the creators of Rorasuketo? Give me a t-shirt right now and you can have the keys to my Ferrari." It's good to be prepared... to towel-snap a billionaire with a custom printed t-shirt.
My latest Alpha 1.04 playthrough reads as 9.5 hours so far. That includes time spent hopping over to the other monitor to fix or change things. Throwing in a \.\. or two to let dialogue breathe, or making a note to give Wedge's hands two more pixels - that sort of fix, most of them. At one point, I did run into a game-breaking bug (I want to say the third we've found?), because as it turns out, if you tell an NPC to walk through a wall, RPG Maker will stare into infinity trying. A very easy fix, though.
One of my testers explained where he was in the story, and asked how much longer he had to go. It was a thrilling moment, because I got to tell him there were about 3 or 4 more hours left; he had just scratched the surface. I felt happy. It was one of those "I'm happy" moments that forces you immediately out of the moment to - now bordering on disturbed - analyze why you are happy. I recognized that my video game is a paltry little thing, but it's still my paltry little thing. Four hours of gameplay represents what feels like an eternity of work, and an amount of work I thought would never come to anything meaningful.
On this note, I was reading forum posts recently from other amateur game devs describing the reactions of friends and family: "You're making a video game? How long will that take - a week?". Lord have mercy. I am reminded of the start of my roller derby career. Having not skated since the seventh grade class party, well-meaning people assumed they would be watching me play in a month's time. In reality, it took nine months before I could somewhat reliably perform a backwards transition, which is just one of the abilities required to even qualify to be an alternate with that particular league. No, friends. Shit takes a while.
Still in disbelief that this is where we are.
