We were online for about an hour and looked at how some of the roller skating minigames worked in RPG Maker MZ. You can rewatch the stream if you missed it.
I'm pecking away at things. It's still hard to lock in (as the kids say) and do the bouts because they are staggeringly un-fun compared to everything else. I find myself going back to sprite sheets, even. It's like when you need to do the dishes, but instead you clean the microwave, mop the floor, and anything else to avoid that dreaded casserole dish caked with lasagna. Hell, maybe even this post is avoidance! But I powered through yesterday, and Jam 1 of Bout 4 is done. That's no small feat. I count 7 different outcomes based on player performance just in that jam. A solid landmark accomplishment.
Okay, to be kind to myself, here's what else I've done this past week:
- Finished Bout 2 (!)
- Second therapy session for the player
- Finished up wristguard logic puzzle (wouldn't you like to know?)
- Cleaned up/fixed some date dialogue
- Improved skater sprites (the arms were bothering me - is that anal retentive or what?)
- Tweaked equipment stats so now different brands of skates differ more greatly in their stat boosts
- Documented stat growth to ensure minigame stat checks are accurate
- Finally figured out how RPG Maker handles stats when changing classes and fixed the "hey, your stats are suddenly doubled" bug that was driving me insane
- Updated walkthrough
I continue to find little details and bugs that need correcting. There's still even the occasional line of text that is squeezed into the dialog box just a little too tightly for my taste - as a result of changing fonts last year or the year before. Yes, in RPG Maker, you manually add line breaks to save processing power. Sometimes I get hung up on things like that, but I'm an actual "detail oriented person" (not just in job interviews). It's hard sometimes to not get blown totally off-course.
I find myself wondering if I would do another video game after this one. Perhaps - I have an idea. But I might want to bring a more programming-minded person on board to do the nitty-gritty while I fly on the wings of fancy, writing dialogue and creating sprites and doing all of those classically "fitful artist" tasks.
Take care of each other out there!
